So there was no time to enjoy my double gold medals as I wanted to post a faster time at 1500m, with limited chances now for me I wanted to have a crack while I was on form. I knew after Sunday a faster time was in me and even writing this now 6 days later I think I can still get faster. Anyway, yet again for me to race a decent track race it meant heading over the Woodhead on a Tuesday evening. Shock horror yet another 60 minutes stuck in traffic due to a broken down lorry. It meant we didn’t arrive at the track till gone half 7. I quickly got entered and then had the chance to watch two ladies I train with run the 800m races.
I then set about getting warmed up. It was going to be another late race as there was a few 800 races. It took till gone 9:00pm to be told our heats. I was placed in race 4 and was happy because there was two runners who had pipped me in the mile race the previous week. I managed to speak to them and both wanted around 4:30 which is also my target time. So after watching some fast BMC racing and the heats in front of mine it was time to line up.
Plan was to control first lap, stick to splits and then give it hell on last lap. This time I was a little sluggish out the blocks but I soon worked my way up the field and passed the Rochdale runners. I ran a good first 400 but dropped a couple of seconds on 2nd lap and clocked 2:27 however, I went up a gear on the 3rd lap and felt really good, nailing my 3 lap split in 3:36, however on the back straight a runner cut in too soon, causing me to stubble and while I managed to avoid falling I did lose precious time and places. I managed to get going and give a good 150m sprint to cross the line with a new personal best of 4:33.38. A big 3s improvement over a distance that is firmly becoming a favorite of mine. However, I was a bit annoyed at the runner who in truth should have stayed on the outside and checked before cutting me up. I reckon I was on for 4:30 had it not happened.
My next 1500m is the North of England Championships at my home stadium and hoping to go 4:30 if conditions and field allows. It will also be good to medal at a bigger championship. A big thanks goes to Sarah as we’ve got a great system going so I’m able to respond to what she says on every lap.
