Pinrace Review

Race day you see runners pinning their race numbers to their attire, 9 times out of 10 the numbers are not straight and you either end up pricking your finger or your body. On windy days chances are the number will blow off or rip and the damage to your attire gets worse the more races you do. There is no market for alternatives, there are clips, running belts and magnets. Each with a varied amount of benefits. I hate kit getting wrecked and that was what pins were doing to my club vest. There is no market for alternatives, there are clips, running belts and magnets. Each with a varied amount of benefits. I hate kit getting wrecked and that was what pins were doing to my club vest. I mentioned in a tweet was looking at alternatives for testing, a few direct messages later and Pinrace sent me a set to test.

So I recently did both the Trafford 10k and Shakespeare 10k using the Pinrace magnets to see how they held up against using safety pins.

My Review

The pack comes with 4 pins in a cardboard/plastic housing. You can access them by taking off the back of the packet. They are basically 4 super strong and I mean super strong. They are very attracted to each other! The magnets are  nickel-plated neodymium magnets have a gripping strength of 1.6 kg each. Each magnet has a back and front, simply put the back up your top and then let the magnets clamp together.

It does take some practice getting them in place but there is nothing worse then having a wonky number. If you’ve been sent your race number through the post it means you can lay your top out on the kitchen table to get it spot on. However most races I do, you don’t get number till morning of the race. This is when my wife works her magic getting the number straight.

Pinrace_HowToUse from Pinrace on Vimeo.

She found them difficult to pull apart (more down to her nails) but other than that she didn’t prick herself like she sometimes does at other races. Not only that at Trafford 10k the weather was horrendous with rain and wind, yet the number never budge and stayed on even after I took my vest off I simply had to pull magnets apart afterwards to detach the number from my wet vest.

And best thing unlike over 3rd party alternatives the magnets do not leave marks or holes in your top, which is a massive plus for me. The back of the pins are smooth on the skin so causes no rubbing, you might notice them at first but during the race, I never felt a thing. Some people have mentioned on social media that the plastic caps that cover the magnets  occasionally pop off, personally not had the issue but make sure you slide the magnets part, instead of pulling them.

If you run with HRM mounted on chest make sure you position the Pinrace away from the monitor and keep away from watches and smartphones due to the magnets.

So while they are not a MUST have running item, if you want to make your tops last and not have thumbs like second hand dartboards then for £9.50 its not a bad investment. Each pack you get 4 ( enough to pin one number) or you can buddy up and get 5 packs for £42.00 if you want to split the costs.  There are 6 standard colours, plus limited edition Manchester Marathon and Half Marathon ones. Then a charity one as well. There is also option to have club logos done, priced on application. I was sent the Yellow and purple ones for testing but plan on grabbing a couple of red/white ones to match club colours.
