Mile End parkrun #340

Another fast time!

So after Bakewell, I wanted to prove it wasn’t a fluke time but my parkrun appearances will be limited between now and Christmas as my challenge takes priority. I had planned on York/Heslington this past weekend but a last minute in my work schedule meant come Saturday morning I found myself in the big smoke. Not one to let an opportunity to run a new parkrun pass me by, I look on the parkrun website for the nearest one to me. Mile End parkrun was on the central line and only took 15 mins from the LEGO Offices.

It was then a few mins run from station to the start of the parkrun, I almost missed the start as got a tad lost. I arrived as the word go sounded. So I started at the back. This kinda helped as I worked my way through the field in the first lap. The route was in Mile End park it followed the main path past the football pitches, past some pond then up over the road on the green bridge. Underneath was both a Costa and Starbucks, as we descended I had made my way into 3rd place. I felt good as we loop round then next to the water side as we headed back the way we came, have runners heading other way spurring me on helped. I was not focused on pushing pace as first mile gave me 5:31. The route was back over the bridge, people said it was tough but coming from Yorkshire it was a lump. Besides a few turns there was plenty of long straights allowing me to pick up the pace.

The course was two laps so as I came back to start/finish area we had to run around a cone and then back on lap two. By now I was closing gap on the leader as we hit the bridge for a 3rd time watch buzzed for 5:21 2nd mile. Wow I still felt strong so I decided to hold pace till I hit the bridge again. So as I looped round I hit the bridge and kicked hard using the downhill slope to push past first lap runners. I was closing down the first place runner but knew he had too big of lead, so instead I focused on passing as many first lap runners as possible. I became that focused I ran through finish line and had to be shouted to stop. I looked down on watch to see a 16:47.6. I knew it was a massive PB after the previous parkruns sub 17. However that afternoon the results filtered through and I was given 16:43. BOOM Wow now I want a sub 16:30, plus I want the full set, so need to do it in a road race and on the track. Then I will be 100% happy.
