Coming up in January

Belated Happy New Year to my blog readers, fundraising supporters and everyone else. I hope you had a wonderful holiday period. Today is the first day back at work, so that means I have to play some serious catch up on my blog. First up December went very well a new PB at both 10 miles and 5 miles, another race win at the Sneyd Striders 5 mile pudding run. I had a storming run at the tough Travellers 6 and finished off the year with a return to parkruns (report to follow). The only blip was I didn’t manage to get to do the Ribble Valley 10k for a number of reasons, instead I did my first 20 mile run since I was training for the London Marathon back in 2015.

So this brings me to 2017. The slate is clean and I have new personal bests to achieve. What do I have targeted and planned?

Well my main target is to run a sub 36 10k and then to finally achieve my long standing ambition to run a 34:xx 10k time is to continue to improve and get faster so I would like to beat the following times:

  • 1 mile: sub 5
  • 3000m: sub 10
  • 5k/5000m/parkrun: sub 17
  • 5 mile: sub 28
  • 10k: sub 35
  • 10 mile: sub 59
  • half marathon: sub 79

Those are my main targets, racing wise I don’t like to plan too far ahead as I’ve learnt from last year things can change in an instant, so I take it one month at a time. Unless it’s a major race that I have to enter in advance for. By the back end of April my main focus will be on short road races and track races. For now though the focus is still on building a good winter base and that will lead me into my first major race of 2017 (weather permitting) The Brass Monkey half marathon on the 15th January.

However before that I have my first track race of the year on the 11th at the Barnsley AC Winter track series. This also happens to be my birthday and the day I become a V35. Will be a good test on where I’m at nice and early. After these two races I can take stock and evaluate how the training has gone etc. Now the festive period is over I’m once again free on Saturdays, so will be using parkruns as my 2nd speed session a week, followed by a long run on a Sunday. At the end of the month, I’m looking for a Saturday race but nothing yet penciled in.

Here is my provisional plans for January (as always subject to change):

  • 7/1 parkrun
  • 11/1 5000m track race
  • 15/1 Brass Monkey HM
  • 25/1 3000m track race
