After the 3000m race, I spoke to Jamie (Russell) afterwards as he watched my race, we discussed how I could improve on my time, how the race went, what worked and what didn’t. We decided that it would be worth me having a crack at some shorter distances and work back up the distances. He was taking a group of his coached juniors to the Charnwood Open and suggested I tagged along. I entered in advance and I was one of the oldest taking part, I was certainly the oldest in my heat.!
We arrived in plenty of time and I did a warm up with the others who was doing the 1500m. Jamie and I had spoken before hand of the plan and tactics. Aim was to go through first 400m in 71/72s, hit 800m in 2:20 and then try hit a 74s 3rd lap and then give it everything on last lap. It sounds easy on paper and knowing that I was knocking out 65s 400m reps the other week and when I do my 400 session I usually always run 70s. It meant I need to get out quick. With me being the oldest I suspected the youngsters would all shoot off out the blocks. I was in heat 3 of 4 with each race having quicker runners in it.
I lined up and felt good, nervous but felt I had a quick 1500m in me. The gun went and I was sluggish out the blocks and let the others race off, I settled in behind them until we got to bottom bend and realised pace wasn’t fast enough, so within 80m I worked my way up to 2nd, I hit first 400 in 76. Shit! I thought way too slow and I could hear Jamie yelling at me to get moving, moving I did as I chased the lad from Lincoln in first place. The 800m came in 2:26, again the first lap had cost me but I hadn’t lost anymore time.
The 3rd lap I made sure I gave it everything and was closing down 1st as the bell went, he kicked, I kicked and I chased him all the way round the last lap. I came home in 2nd place in 4:40.31 a new personal best by 4s but was actually disappointed as I knew that first lap was rubbish. I finished 4s behind 1st place and 5s in front of 3rd place. I plan on having another attempt later this month with the aim to run 4:3X. Before that I’ve got a small matter of a 3000m tomorrow night. Got to say it’s helped having a qualified coach watch me race on track recently as it’s helping me improve my track racing.
